Second Hand Clothes in Malta
A First Buyer's Guide

Buying secondhand for the first time in Malta? Here's how condition grades work, what pre-loved clothes actually cost on the island, how local delivery works, and what to do if something doesn't match the listing. Last reviewed April 2026.

What the condition grades actually mean

Most listings on Thrifted.mt use one of four condition grades. New with tags means what it sounds like — the item is unworn and the original retail tags are still attached. Like New covers items worn once or twice with no visible wear, no pilling, no fading; if you can't tell it's secondhand, it's Like New. Good is the bulk of what you'll see — clearly worn, but no holes, stains or major flaws. This grade covers a large share of what you'll see across all categories. Fair means real signs of wear are visible — small marks, light fading, slight pilling — and the seller should call them out specifically in the description. If a Fair listing doesn't mention what's wrong, that's a red flag worth a quick message to the seller before buying.

A quick word on sizing

Listings on Thrifted.mt show whatever size label was on the original garment — UK, EU, or US. Always check the measurements where the seller has provided them; brands run differently and a UK 10 in one label is closer to a UK 12 in another. If a listing only shows the label size and you're unsure, message the seller to ask for chest, waist, or length in centimetres before buying. Most sellers are happy to measure.

What pre-loved clothes typically cost in Malta

Pre-loved prices on Thrifted.mt depend on three things: brand, condition, and demand. A high-street basic in good condition usually sits 50-70% below retail. Branded pieces — Levi's, Adidas, COS — hold value better, often 30-50% off retail. Items in Like New condition are priced higher than Good but the gap is often smaller than you'd expect, since most listings are still well-loved and undamaged. Buying locally also dodges costs invisible to overseas buyers — no parcel-forwarding markup, no cross-border shipping, no customs hassles.

CategoryTypical rangeMost listings under
Dresses€10–€35€15
Jeans€7–€30€10

Prices reflect what people are actually paying on Thrifted.mt right now. They shift with the seasons — light dresses go quickly in early summer, coats and jumpers in autumn — and rare or in-demand brands sit higher than the typical range. The price you see is what you pay; sellers don't add commissions and there are no listing fees (see full pricing).

How local delivery works

Two delivery options on Thrifted.mt. EasiPik locker delivery — €3.25 island-wide, the seller hands in at any MaltaPost or sub-post office and the buyer picks up from their chosen locker using a PIN sent by SMS. In-person meetup — free, agreed between buyer and seller in chat, with QR-code handover confirmation. Both options keep your payment in escrow until the handover is confirmed.

What happens if it's not as described

Every payment on Thrifted.mt is held in escrow by Stripe until the buyer confirms delivery. If the item doesn't match the listing — wrong size, undisclosed damage, photos didn't represent the actual condition — you have 48 hours after delivery confirmation to open a dispute. The funds stay frozen while we review. If the dispute is upheld, you get your money back; the seller doesn't.

Dispute process in detail

How to spot a well-described listing

A well-described listing tells you what you're getting before you have to ask. Most disputes on Thrifted.mt come from listings that left out information the buyer needed — not from sellers being deceptive. Here's a quick five-point check before you commit:

  • The brand is visible in at least one photo (logo, label, hardware) or stated in the description
  • The size label is shown clearly in a photo (inner-collar tag, waistband, sole, etc.)
  • Measurements are listed when the seller could reasonably take them — chest, waist, length, foot length
  • The condition grade is supported by close-up photos of any wear, marks, or flaws called out in the description
  • Materials are stated or shown via the care label

If a listing is missing two or more of these and the seller is asking a meaningful price, message them before buying. Most will fill in the gaps. The ones that don't are the ones to skip.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “like new” mean when buying secondhand clothes?

Like New means the item has been worn once or twice with no visible signs of wear — no pilling, no fading, no marks, no stretched seams. If you put it on and couldn't tell it was secondhand, it's Like New. Sellers are expected to flag any imperfection in the description; if a Like New listing doesn't, message the seller before buying.

How much do secondhand clothes cost in Malta?

Most pre-loved clothes on Thrifted.mt sit well below high-street retail. Typical ranges: dresses €10–€35 (most under €15), jeans €7–€30 (most under €10). Branded and rare items sit higher; basics from fast-fashion brands sit lower. Prices reflect what people are actually paying right now and shift seasonally.

Is it safe to buy secondhand clothes online in Malta?

Safety depends on whether the platform handles payment in escrow. On Thrifted.mt, every payment is held by Stripe until the buyer confirms delivery, and you have 48 hours after that to open a dispute if the item isn't as described. Funds stay frozen during review. Escrow gives you a clear refund route that direct cash transactions don't.

What happens if a secondhand item doesn't match its description?

Open a dispute within 48 hours of delivery confirmation. The seller's funds stay frozen while we review. Common grounds include undisclosed damage, wrong size on a labelled item, or photos that misrepresented the actual condition. If the dispute is upheld, you get a full refund. The 48-hour window is firm — after that, funds release to the seller automatically.

Where else can I buy secondhand clothes in Malta in person?

Charity shops run by MSPCA, Inspire Foundation and various parish initiatives sell donated stock at the lowest prices. Curated vintage shops like Thrift In The City (Valletta), Cherrystone and Dainty Vintage (Gharghur) carry handpicked pieces. See Malta's thrift shop directory for opening hours and locations.
